3 Ways to Unwind After a Long Day

We’re all guilty of bringing the office home with us. The result is that that our professional stress permeates our personal space as well our personal relationships which doesn’t do us, or our loved ones any favors. While part of being passionate about what you do may mean you carry your work around with you, it’s important to find ways to unwind after long and challenges day, not only so that you can be more accessible to those around you, but so that you give yourself permission to recharge so that you can face the next day refreshed and recharged. Sometimes letting go of that stress feels like an impossible feet, so here are some tips for you try and see what works for you.

Breathe

Nothing clears the mind and relives stress like a few minutes of deliberate centering. One way to do this is to focus on the breath. The breath is not only the gateway between our bodies and our minds; it’s the anchor to the present moment. By deliberating focusing on your breath, you force yourself to occupy a third person position of witnessing. That is, as you train your mind to watch your breath, to simply focus on the quality and sensation of your breath moving in and out of the body, you learn to begin to observe other facets of our life as well and not to over identify or get caught up in the dramas of your life. To paint a picture, you begin not only to see yourself as the little boat at sea riding stormy waves, but to understand that you are in fact simultaneously the infinite calm beneath the rough surface.  This exercise in watching the breath is a way to train the mind to become the eternal observer which is whole and at peace.  The breath is a wonderful gateway to this understanding. And the best part is, you can do it anywhere, anytime and need not take more than a few minutes. Simple, yet probably the most effective way to release stress at the end of the day.

Get Moving

There is nothing better than some endorphins to help release stress and clear the mind. Again, this need not entail a lengthy trip to gym. If you’re pressed for time, simple go for a jog around the block or try some free online cardio videos. A couple star jumps, squats or lunges can go a long way to releasing mental stress and activating the energy flow in the body.  Even a few stretches, or better a yoga session, are a wonderful way to bring the mind back to neutral. So get moving!

Clear Your Space

There is nothing worse than coming home after a long day to clutter and mess. It makes it exceedingly difficult to let go of stress when your physical space is not harmonious. So make clearing your space a priority as you walk through the door. This does not necessarily mean clearing up, but also clearing the energy of your home by burning some incense, playing some calming music or lighting a candle. Not only will this help your personal stress levels, but will create a harmonious feeling for everyone with whom you share a living space. This is a simple trick, but does wonders to relieve stress and tension and to create space for new possibilities at the end of a difficult day.
