Friendship…One of The Greatest Gifts in Life

If there is one thing we can do in life, it’s picking our own friends. True good-friends are there in good times and in bad, when you’re happy, when you’re sad, when things are going well and when they’re not. A friend is someone to call when you want to uplift your day. They are there to support and encourage you and tell you that life is going to be ok. And a really good friend is going to tell you the truth whether you want it or not. Friends make you laugh and there’s nothing greater than sharing your life with your true friends.

Just last night, my best friend Jackie and her husband Sam made me the most beautiful birthday dinner. It started with wonderful hors d’oeuvres and a toast of champagne to ring in my day. Then we moved to the most delicious grapefruit and avocado salad with a lemon-vinaigrette dressing. Next came a fantastic chicken entrée (kind of like a bouillabaisse…but I can’t for the life of me remember what she called it), cooked all day in a crock-pot with delicious vegetables and herbs. It was cooked to perfection! She then walked out with a double chocolate birthday cake, the top reading: “Happy Birthday Sweet Betsy.” My favorite was the fun, colored candles. And let me tell you, I made one REALLY good wish, but I can’t tell you what it was because it won’t come true.

Yes the meal was delicious, but it was even better because Jackie made it with love. She kept me in mind every step of the way, making things she knew I’d love on my special day. Jackie and I have known each other since we were seven years old. She truly is my oldest, dearest, long-time friend and our friendship keeps blossoming and growing. We are even collaboratively writing a piece about the journey of life, love, friendship and happiness. We are enjoying this process together. Even though we want success from it (and I believe that’s going to come), the most gratifying part is the process of sharing, laughing, reminiscing and influencing others to have as great a friendship as Jackie and I have with each other.

My dear friend David joined us as well and it was a beautiful evening of conversation, stories, life and sharing. It made me feel so happy to know that I have really great, wonderful close friends. I have friends from all walks of life: some abroad in places like Turkey and one of my dearest friends and college roommate Lisa, who lives in New Mexico. Even beautiful friends right here in New York, like my friend Susan who I met my junior year in college, studying abroad in Florence, Italy. And I have so many other wonderful friends that make me happy to be around. Even if we can’t see each other all the time, knowing they are there if I need them makes all the difference in the world. You know the line from the song “You’ve Got a Friend” by James Taylor? “You just call out my name, and you know wherever I am, I’ll come running to see you again…”. Nothing could ring truer.

And the birthday has not stopped, because even today (the day after my birthday), I was given the sweetest gift from my wonderful assistant Steven. The card was heartfelt and warm, even signed by his puppy Jersey (a little paw print next to his name). It was such a beautifully unexpected gesture. He gave me a healing, aromatherapy “Love” candle, telling me to make a wish when lighting it and before blowing it out, continuously attracting my wishes into being.

Friends are one of the GREATEST gifts of life! But you need to BE a good friend to HAVE a good friend. Reach out today to your friends and let them know how important they are to you. Friends become your family, so enrich your life by cherishing your friendships.
